Kentucky Can Take Your License

Updated: Jul 5, 2023

Did you know that Kentucky can take your license if you fall behind on your state taxes? Many taxpayers are surprised to learn that their Kentucky Driver’s License has been suspended by the Department of Revenue because of unpaid state tax debts. But it’s not only your driver’s license that is in jeopardy. Kentucky can suspend or revoke professional and occupational licenses as well. So, for example, if you’re an attorney, a doctor, a plumber or an electrician and are required to hold a license in order to work in your trade or profession, the Department of Revenue can literally suspend your ability to legally earn a living.

Preventing people with tax troubles from driving to work or taking their kids to school or from going to work in their chosen field at all is a ruthless thing to do to someone who may already be suffering through wage or bank levies. The Department of Revenue already has a powerful arsenal of collection tools at its disposal, so it was surprising that the 2012 Kentucky General Assembly enacted legislation allowing the government to take away your right to work and drive.

Instead of helping you find ways to resolve your tax problems, the state only seems to want to make your situation worse. Hard working people who have lost their license often resort to one of two solutions: they rely on friends or family to driven them around, or worse, they drive illegally. Having to rely on others to drive you around is hard on everyone involved and you are forced to live your life by someone else’s schedule. If you drive illegally you can wind up in jail with criminal charges added to your tax burdens. It is a hopeless feeling.

There is a third and better solution. Stop ignoring your state tax debts. They are not going to go away. It is as simple as seeking help. We can help restore your driving privileges or your occupational license, even if you are struggling to pay for your basic living needs. If your licenses have already been suspended please don’t make your situation worse by ignoring your tax debts because you don’t have the money to pay them. Many people just like you have the same problem and you have nothing to be ashamed of.

If you owe delinquent state taxes and your license has not yet been suspended, it is only a matter of time before it happens to you. Don’t wait for Revenue to suspend your right to drive or to do your job.
